Rev. Dr. Deborah Jungmi Kang (She/Her), Lead Pastor
Pastor Deborah has served Open Door UMC since July 1, 2023. She is an ordained elder in full connection with the Northern Illinois Conference. She holds a Doctorate of Ministry in Preaching, a Master of Theological Studies, and a Master of Divinity from The Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary in the U.S. Additionally, she earned a Master of Theology from Yonsei University Graduate School in South Korea and a Bachelor of Theology from Hyupsung University in South Korea.
Pastor Deborah’s passion lies in various ministries, such as preaching and teaching, worship and music, pastoral care and counseling, radical hospitality, as well as mercy and justice for the community. She dedicates her efforts to enriching the lives of others through these meaningful avenues. Currently, she is pursuing her Ph.D. in Liturgical Studies at the Graduate Theological Union, further deepening her expertise in this field.
Her husband, Chris Chiyong Oh has served as a senior pastor in the Wisconsin Conference of the UMC at Waupaca Regional Ministry. Grounded by his music background, majoring in voice, conducting, and church music, he has been actively involved in diverse music ministries and community programs. Together, they have a wonderful daughter named Hera Minju Oh, who majors in political science and sociology at Emory University in Atlanta. Pastor Deborah and her family have sweet dogs like their names, Honey, Sugar, and Boba. They all enjoy the simple pleasures of eating delicious food and taking leisurely walks, just like Pastor Deborah and her family do. They deeply appreciate God’s guidance and strength as they follow God’s calling to make a positive impact on the lives of others.
Terry Lezama-Jensen (He/Him), Music Director
Terry Lezama-Jensen began his Pastoral Music Ministry in 1971 as Chapel Choir Director at his alma mater, Berry College in Mt. Berry, GA. Since then he has found himself in Methodist, United Church of Christ, Presbyterian, Lutheran, Disciples of Christ, Interdenominational, and Catholic communities where he has been called on to sing, play the organ and piano, direct, preach, and teach.
Terry is a native of the Bay Area, born and raised in Petaluma. In 1979 he moved down to San Francisco and spent three decades living, working and ministering there. In 2009 he moved across the bay to take his chances with the Hayward Fault. Terry and his Nicaraguan husband Mauricio live in Vallejo, with their three dogs and one cat. When not working at his real job as a Business Systems Analyst in San Francisco, or doing music for us, Terry enjoys barbecuing and lazing around the pool, exploring local street fairs, checking out historic sites, dining at restaurants (both the interesting and the mundane), watching telenovelas to improve his rudimentary Spanish, and taking in first-run movies at the local multiplex.
Adriana Ruiz (She/Her), Director of Young Generation’s Ministries
Adriana is originally from Colombia. She immigrated to the United States 28 years ago. She studied human service at the College of San Mateo. Adriana worked in a Jewish synagogue for 18 years as a care taker and child care provider. She has also worked as a tutor for elementary school children in Richmond, and is currently teaching in an after school program in Marin County. She is married to Jesus Ruiz and they have a 23 year old son who is finishing his masters in New York City. They now live with their other son Snickers, a chocolate Labrador. In her free time Adriana loves traveling and entertaining with family and friends. She also enjoys reading walking, painting and practicing yoga. She loves working with children and getting involved in community projects.
Erika Cortes (She/Her), Assistant Director of Young Generation’s Ministries
Erika Cortes is our Assistant Child Care Provider. Erika lives in Richmond, is a student at Berkeley City College, and hopes to be a pediatric nurse someday. She comes to us with extensive child care experience and a great love for children. For fun, Erika likes to dance and to go places like the zoo. She joins Adriana Ruiz in caring for our kids on Sunday mornings.
Nojixa Anacleto or Nani (She Her), Office Administrator
Nojixa Anacleto is our Office Administrator. Nojixa is currently a Contra Costa College student, She hopes to be a journalist. Nojixa likes photography, going outdoors, and hanging with her friends.
