Music Director

Open Door United Methodist Church, a small, but passionate church located in the hills above Richmond, California, is seeking a Music Director to work with our Pastor and worship team. This part-time position requires an experienced musician with leadership skills who can help our musicians and congregation grow as disciples of Jesus Christ through worship and music. 

Responsibilities will include, but may not be limited to:

Music Program Management

  • Attend weekly church staff and one-on-one meetings with the Pastor;
  • Prepare annual goals as part of the church’s strategic plan, and annual budget recommendation;
  • Recommend music and instrument purchases, manage maintenance church instruments, and monitor program expenses against the approved annual budget;
  • Hire substitute or guest musicians for regular services and special services as requested;
  • Maintain records of correspondence for quarterly and annual reports;
  • Maintain the music library, including obtaining and tracking all the required licensing and permissions;
  • Schedule and direct rehearsals of regular musicians and special music groups;
  • Liaise with child care coordinator on children’s music program, including regular worship music participation.

Worship Services

  • Assist the Pastor or guest preacher with planning the schedule of music for regular weekly services, and up to six special services per year;
  • Be present at Sunday morning services to direct musicians, and provide accompaniment;
  • Be present at holiday services, including Christmas Eve and other special services as requested.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Music Performance, Music Education, or related field
  • Five years minimum experience accompanying soloists or music groups on the piano/keyboard
  • Experience in the performance of sacred music
  • Strong communication and organizational skills

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Ability to play additional instruments (handbell experience strongly preferred)
  • Experience in multiple musical genres
  • Experience directing beginning musicians or children

Administrative Assistant

Open Door United Methodist Church, a small, but passionate church located in the hills above Richmond, California, is seeking an Administrative Assistant to work with our Pastor and lay leadership. This part-time position will facilitate the missional work of Open Door UMC through thoughtful, attentive, and accurate administrative efforts. 

Responsibilities include, but may not be limited to:

Communication & Publications

  • Greet visitors and answer the church phone during regular office hours;
  • Respond to voice and email messages, or forward to Pastor or Church Council members, as appropriate;
  • Maintain records of correspondence for quarterly and annual reports;
  • Assist in the compilation and publication of the weekly bulletin and email message, and the congregational newsletter;
  • Keep worship and fellowship host lists updated and send weekly reminders
  • Assist with website content and copy-editing.

Trustee Support

  • Serve as point of contact for outside contractors and vendors, including intake of estimates and bids, scheduling work approved by the Trustees, and facilitating access during the work day;
  • Coordinate facility rental process from initial request to day of the rental, obtaining the appropriate approval of the rental agreement;
  • Update the church calendar, including other community events held on site, as approved by the Trustees and/or Pastor;
  • Maintain key/access list, distribute keys, and order additional keys.
  • Serve as liaison with Crestmont School during regular office hours, including scheduling of shared site maintenance and inspections.

Office Management

  • Attend church staff and committee meetings, take and disseminate minutes;
  • Receive mail and shipments, including sorting for Pastor, staff, and committee chairs;
  • Serve as on-site liaison with bookkeeper;
  • Maintain volunteer files, including background check documents
  • Keep inventory of church and office supplies, provide pastor-approved list to volunteer shoppers;
  • Oversee the maintenance of church office equipment;
  • Update office software and renew software licenses;
  • Make recommendations to the Pastor regarding repair and replacement of office equipment and furniture as necessary

Required Qualifications:

High school diploma or equivalent

Three years experience in a general office setting

Professional experience with the Google office suite

Strong writing, proofreading, and editing skills

Strong interpersonal communication skills

Ability to maintain confidentiality and adapt to changing priorities

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience with Constant Contact and PowerChurch

Salary is commensurate with experience.
